How to Catch a Cheating Spouse

| 01/02/2017

You may be asking yourself, how can I find out if my wife or husband, girlfriend or boyfriend is cheating on me? Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to catch a cheating partner. The majority of people do not know how to investigate a spouse for infidelity, which is why it’s valuable to resource a private investigator.

Why is it Very Difficult to Catch a Cheating Spouse?

Catching a cheating partner is hard because cheaters hold an unfair advantage with their infidelity. Statistics suggest that most infidelity goes undetected or unproven because the rules of infidelity favour those who engage in acts of cheating.

Exploiting a Partner’s Trust

Most individuals have a strong inclination to believe their partner and take them at their word. Trust created between two people creates a sense of comfort and security. Nobody wants to think that partner may be lying, especially when it relates to infidelity. Rather than assume a worst case scenario, it’s easier to believe a lie than face a potentially devastating truth. In fact, some individuals work extremely hard to overlook a partner’s infidelity. They do this because acknowledging the truth may be too painful, which is why the spouse is typically the last person to suspect and prove infidelity. Cheating partners take advantage of this fact and often exploit their partner’s desire to trust them at their every word.

Potential Signs of a Cheating Partner

Unfortunately, there are very few hard and fast signs that your partner may be cheating. Cues of infidelity vary immensely from relationship to relationship, making it difficult to provide an insightful list of behaviours that may accurately predict cheating. Even if we were to provide a list of potential signs of infidelity, it would be counterproductive because:

  1. Behaviour is open to multiple interpretations. For example, although a sudden interest in weight loss could signal potential infidelity, it could also be an innocent attempt at self-improvement. Explaining behaviour is very difficult.
  2. Looking at signs of infidelity tend to fuel suspicions. For example, if your partner is constantly clearing their mobile phone history and you read that this behaviour is a sign of potential infidelity, you will tend to dwell on it and actually help a cheating spouse hide their behaviour.

Suspicion Tends to Help Cheaters

Suspicion is a powerful emotion and is difficult to hide from others. Once you become suspicious, you tend to signal doubts by making accusations, acting anxiously, or being overly inquisitive.

A cheating partner’s worst fear is getting caught and because of this, cheaters constantly monitor their spouse for signs of suspicion. If a cheating partner detects suspicion, he or she will adjust his/her behaviour to better hide and conceal the affair. Taken together, cheaters have an advantage in that trust and suspicion tend to work in their favour.

So, How Can You Catch a Cheating Spouse?

If you suspect your spouse may be cheating, do not confront them unless you have proof. While it can be helpful to talk to partners about most relationship issues, infidelity is an exception. A cheating partner will almost never admit to cheating unless they are presented with evidence to the contrary.
