A Real Private Investigator Became a Character in Charles Dickens Novels

British policeman became a Private Investigator

Charles Frederick Field (1805–1874) was a British policeman who worked for Scotland Yard. After leaving public service, he became a Private Investigator.

Charles Dickens was his close friend. In the novel Bleak House (1853), which is considered one of the first British detective novels, Inspector Bucket appears. The character was based on the London Police Investigator, Charles Frederick Field, whom the writer portrays with great respect. Furthermore, the famous writer wrote a short story about Field titled “On Duty with Inspector Field.”
